High-impact (also called high-dosage) tutoring is changing this story. This intensive academic mentoring is a rigorous, data-driven, personalized instruction that aligns directly with what students are learning in class. According to the National Student Support Accelerator (NSSA) at Stanford University, “high-impact tutoring leads to substantial learning gains for students by supplementing (but not replacing) students’ classroom experiences.” In this blog post, we’ll explore this type of targeted dose intervention, the benefits it brings, and some tools for how schools and district-aligned programs can implement it to maximize student success.

Unlike traditional after-school tutoring or homework help, high-impact tutoring involves small, consistent groups meeting multiple times each week inside the classroom or outside of the classroom. It’s aligned with classroom learning, guided by data, and led by trained tutors who form strong relationships with students.

In this study, around 2,000 students in Chicago Public Schools and Fulton County Schools participated in districtwide in-school tutoring, and saw meaningful improvement in math learning.

Scaling high-impact tutoring is not just a logistical challenge—it’s a strategic one. Successful district-wide expansion requires a clear vision, intentional design, and careful coordination between central offices, school leaders, and tutoring partners. Below are key strategies to help districts scale high-impact tutoring in ways that are sustainable, effective, and accessible to all learners.

This post offers five key strategies districts can use to make that shift feel smooth, motivating, and impactful—for students, families, and educators.

High-impact tutoring refers to consistent, small-group or one-on-one instruction provided multiple times per week by trained tutors using high-quality instructional materials. Sessions are typically integrated into the school day, or done during consistent after-school programs and are designed to build strong relationships between students and tutors, which is a key factor in their effectiveness.

Often referred to in the past as “high-dosage tutoring,” this updated term reflects a broader emphasis on instructional quality, consistency, and outcomes, not just frequency.

As the National Student Support Accelerator (NSSA) at Stanford University explains:

“High-impact tutoring leads to substantial learning gains for students by combining frequency with quality instructional materials, trained tutors, and consistent relationships.”

Why It Works: The Research Behind It

Research strongly supports the use of high-impact tutoring as one of the most effective strategies for helping students recover unfinished learning:
